88.5 KCSN Radio station satellite studio

KCSN is a radio station located at California State University at Northridge and is popular among local communities and famous for discovering local talents that becomes big stars. They decided to add their satellite studio to Westfield Village for more visibility and to provide a unique environment for radio guests. As a designer at Westfield, Shoko had an opportunity to work with KCSN and the architect of record on this project. The challenges were to make this 300-square-foot studio work operationally as well as provide enough visual impact to the small storefront area and create a cool hang-out vibe for DJ and guest musicians.

Telescoping windows with an oversized metal frame was employed to pull the focus from the busy outdoor mall concourse to the DJ and guest musicians inside. Reclaimed wood provides a contrast to the sleek metal frame and provides a complementary background to the impactful signage. The interior has highly textured wood panels that are both visually interesting while also providing sound absorption/deflection. Row timber wood planks with zig-zag suspension adorn the ceilings, providing a fun splash of color and help with sound management.

Project was designed while employed at Westfield.
